Personal Narrative from Pat Krajaefski

Grampa John Adam Gies was a very quiet man. Although I remember him v ividly, I can't recall ever hearing him speak. He had dark, deep-se t eyes which seemed to pierce my very soul as he sat across from me a t the kitchen table. He had dark hair and a beard. Although I was no t afraid of him, I was certainly in awe of him.

He was an avid reader. Although I don't recall hearing him speak, I d o know he wrote in English and did have a good command of the Englis h language. He was an herbalist. It was said, he was diagnosed as be ing a diabetic when he was a young man. He read and studied and event ually cured himself with herbs. A nun who was a friend of Aunt Jenn y when they were children, recently told brother Len's son Gary that s he remembers running and playing with Jenny in the garden and being sc olded for going into his herb garden. Grampa and Grandma had a very l arge garden with raspberry, red and black currant bushes, apple, pear , cherry and peach trees, strawberries, rhubarb and vegetable patches , in addition to Grandma's flower garden. When I was very small, the re was also a chicken coop at the back corner of the garden.

Among Grampa's papers we found a pedlar's licence issued in 1890 . Apparently he had been ill and was recovering but was unable to d o any heavy work and obtained a pedlar's licence. I believe he hel d various positions after that time. He ran an elevator at Davis Men' s wear, he repaired shoes. I recall him coming home from Baetz Furn iture factory where he worked as fireman tending to the heating of th e plant. He brought home silk scraps - leftovers from lampshade makin g - which Grandma used to make quilts. Even in his later years he ha d land which he planted each year in addition to his very large garden .

He died on March 1, 1947, just three months before his 80th birthday , approximately 12 years after Magdalena died of a stroke. They are b uried side by side in Mount Hope Cemetery, Kitchener.

An interesting paper found in his home after the last of the family , Aunt Jenny, died was a receipt:

"Received from Mrs. Magdalena Gies the sum of $650.00 in payment of Bu ilding Contract of April 6, 1896 with John Adam Gies, in full." Signed: Adam Denger Dated: July 18th, 1896
